After upgrade to lenny in June 2009, the estonian keyboard layout doesn’t work in gnome or GTK.

Observations:
  • the keyboard is a no-brand with 105 keys (Generic-105-keys)

  • after system startup using the automatic user the layout in Gnome is always US

  • the problem does not occur when the automatic user option is switched off.

  • Doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 (going to a non-X console) reveals that there is works.

  • Going to System > Preferences > Keyboard and changing something there (be it just the sort order or adding another layout) will activate the estonian layout.

  • The option “Layout Switching” is set to “Both Ctrl keys together change layout”, but this seems to have no effect.

I found a similar problem reported by a canadian user:

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=42345

His first trick, dpkg-reconfigure console-data, doesn’t change anything.

Next try as suggested by 987687 » 2009-07-26 in above thread:

  • xkbmap ee in a terminal: works

  • edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and in Section “InputDevice”, change: * Option “XkbModel” from pc104 to pc105 * Option XkbLayout from us to ee

This worked for me. So I’m more fortunate than the Canadian user
